The textbook "Maritime English for Marine Engineering" is a learning
resource for students specializing in marine engine structure and its operation.
The textbook consists of 4 units with the following structure:

The textbook provides students with basic maritime vocabulary and applied
terminology for engine department on board and other machineries relating to the
operation. The textbook also provides advanced English grammar which is
usually applied in the maritime field of this textbook mentioned.
The textbook has been compiled with the assistance of colleagues in English
Faculty and Marine Engineering Department, especially the Chief Engineers: Do
Hong Hai, Tran Duc Hoa and Pham Ngoc Anh
Although the textbook has received comments of many experts, colleagues,
members of the Evaluation Council, this first appearance definitely has some
shortcomings. We do hope that colleagues, teachers, students and those who are

I. Module framework:
- Pre-requisites: This module is taught in the first semester of the second school
year, after students have learnt general subjects.
- Scope:: This module is compulsory for students of marine engineering.
II. Objectives:
After completing this module, students will be able to:
- For knowledge: Present the use of the form of “be responsible”; be used”; the
use of the preposition of place; Modal verbs in passive voice; Present perfect;
Gerund; Ranks of the engine department, their duties, names of auxiliary
machnery, safety equipment and some nouns as well as some verbs relating to the
duties of engine officers and ordinary seaman;
- For skills: Listening, speaking, reading and writing in English about the engine
department organization, auxiliary machinery, safety equipment and watchkeeping
duties to fulfill the duties of ordinary Seafarer Engine;
- For attitudes: Raise awareness of the importance of learning English for the
future job as well as the necessary factors in English including pronunciation,
intonation, accuracy, fluency, etc.

Introduction:
This unit is designed to supply students with some vocabulary of ranks and
their duties in engine department in English.
Objectives:
After completing this unit, students will be able to:
- Present the form and uses of verb phrases in English;
- Use verb phrases to listen, speak, read and write the ranks of the engine
department and their duties;
- Raise awareness of the importance of learning English for the future job as
well as practice the accuracy, carefulness in pronunciation, listening,
speaking, reading, writing and communication in English.

2.1. Passive voice
a. Definition
We use active voice when the subject performs the action. We use the
passive voice when we don’t want to say who performs the action.
Example:
The wiper cleans the engine room everyday.
Yet in the form of passive voice, subjects are reacted by the action:

b. Form:
Be + past participle

Tenses in active voice are expressed by main verbs, in contrast, those in
passive voice are expressed in “to be”, and main verbs are changed into the past
participle.
Example:
Active: The engineers replaced all engine parts yesterday.
Passive: All the engine parts were replaced by the engineers yesterday..

3.1 Reading: Ship organization – Engine department
On a modern cargo ship, the ship’s crew is organized under 2 departments:
deck and engine departments. The catering belongs to the deck department. The
responsibilities depend on the company’s SMS.
The engineers on board ships are also called technical officers. They are
responsible for keeping the machinery maintained and operational. Today, ships
are complex systems that combine a lot of technology within a small space. This
includes not only the engines and the propulsion system, but also for example, the
electrical power supply, devices for loading and discharging, garbage incineration
and fresh water generators.
The Chief Engineer is responsible for all operations and maintenance of all
engineering equipment throughout the ship.

The 2nd Engineer is directly responsible to the Chief Engineer for the
overhauling of, and repair work to, the main engine, boilers, auxiliaries, electrical
equipment, deck machinery, etc.
The Third Engineer plans all duties and jobs assigned to him to assist the 2nd
Engineer with the planning of maintenance; to support the Shipboard organization
and Safety organization.
The Fourth Engineer’s responsibilities are exactly the same as those of the 3rd
Engineer. The Chief Engineer will determine the allocation of these
responsibilities.
The main duty of an ordinary seafarer engine (OSE) is maintaining, cleaning
and, at times, operating ship engine parts, including blowers, compressors, motors,
gears, ejectors and other equipment. They are responsible for operating the
lubricant filtering and purifying equipment and keeping logs of the oiling
