ACKNOWLEDMENTS
The textbook "English for Domestic Electricity" is a learning resource for
students specializing in Domestic Electricity. The textbook consists of 5 units with
the following structure:
1. Vocabulary
2. Grammar
3. Skills
4. Practice
5. Assessment
The textbook provides students with basic electrical vocabulary and
applied terminology for domestic electricity. The textbook also provides necessary
English grammar which is usually applied in the field of this textbook mentioned.
The textbook has been compiled with the assistance of colleagues in
Foreign Language Department and Electrical Engineering Department. While
compiling, editors have also used some specialized materials published locally,
abroad and through web-sites.
Although the textbook has received comments from many experts,
colleagues, members of the Evaluation Council, this first appearance definitely has
some shortcomings. We hope that colleagues, teachers, students and those who are
interested in helping to perfect the teaching materials contribute to the application
in practice of the students at Maritime College I in general and students
specialized in domestic electricity in particular.
Any comments or suggestion, please send to the following e-mails:

3.1. Reading: Accident investigation
Accident investigation
Whenever an accident occurs that results in an injury (medical case), damage of
equipment and material, or both, prompt accident investigation by the immediate
manager is required. A written preliminary investigation will be completed by the
end of the particular shift or business day on which the accident occurred.
- 9 -
In no event should there be a delay of more than 24 hours. Failure to comply with
this requirement may subject the immediate manager to disciplinary action up to
and including discharge.
Without adequate accident investigation data, the Company may be subjected to
costs, claims, and legal action for which it has no defense.
As a minimum, the preliminary accident investigation report will include the
following:
1. Name, occupation, and sex of injured worker.
2. Place and date/time of accident.
3. Description of how the accident happened.
4. Immediate causes of the accident – unsafe acts and unsafe conditions.
5. Contributing causes – manager safety performance, level of worker training,
inadequate job procedure, poor protective maintenance, etc.
6. Witness(es) – name and department.
7. Corrective action taken – when.
The employee who was injured and any employee(s) who witnessed the incident
should be separately interviewed as soon as possible. A copy of the report must be
submitted to the Manager of Human Resources for review. Another copy of the
report is to be retained for a period of not less than the injured employee’s length
of employment plus five (5) years.

Task 2: Read the following text and match the paragraphs with the main
contents
paragraph 1
a. What electric motor are used for
b. The commutator
c. The stator
d. The armature
e. Operating principle
An electric motor is a machine for converting electric energy into mechanical
energy. Motors can be designed to run on direct (dc) or alternating current (ac).
Its most important parts are the rotor, the stator and the brush gear.
The rotor is a moving part. It contains an armature, which is a set of wire
loops wound on a steel core. When current is led to the armature, these windings
produce a magnetic field. The armature and core are mounted on a shaft which
runs on a bearing. It provides a mean of transmitting power from the motor.
The rotor also contains a commutator. This consists of a number of a copper
- 17 -
segments insulated from one another. The armature windings are connected to
these segments. Carbon brushes are held in contact with the commutator by
springs. These brushes allow current to pass to the armature windings. As the
rotor turns, the commutator acts as a switch making the current in the armature
alternate.
The stator does not move. It consists of magnetic and electrical conductors.
The magnetic circuit is made up of the frame and the poles. Wound round the
poles are the field coils. These form the stator’s electrical circuit. When current
is fed to them, a magnetic field is set up in the stator.
The motor operates on the principle that when a current-carrying conductor is
placed in a magnetic field, a force is produced on the conductor. The interaction
of the forces produced by the magnetic field of the rotor and the stator makes the
rotor spin.

1.2 Electric Motor Appliances
An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into
mechanical energy. It can be found in applications as diverse as industrial fans,
blowers and pumps, machine tools and household appliances. Electric motors can
be powered by direct current (DC) sources, such as from batteries, motor vehicles
or rectifiers, or by alternating current (AC) sources, such as from the power grid,
inverters or generators. Small motors may be found in electric watches. General-
purpose motors with highly standardized dimensions and characteristics provide
convenient mechanical power for industrial use. The largest of electric motors are
used for ship propulsion, pipeline compression and pumped-storage applications
with ratings reaching 100 megawatts. Electric motors may be classified by electric
power source type, internal construction, application, or type of motion output.
Task 4: Read the text and mark the following statements True or False
a) Electric motor changes mechanical energy into electrical energy.
b) Fan is a household appliance using electric motor.
c) AC cannot be a source of electric motor.
d) Ship propulsion is a kind of largest electric motor.
e) The applications of electric motor are very limited.
2. Language Focus:
